The Firefly Effect: Julie Wignall on Leading with Light
In the latest episode of Storycomic Presents, I had the pleasure of interviewing Julie Wignall, author of The Extraordinary Power of Fireflies: How to Shine Your Light Brighter and Transform the World. Julie brings a wealth of experience from her diverse career in environmental practices, animal care, and leadership roles at Mirage Resorts. Her book serves as both a motivational guide and a call to action, encouraging individuals—whom she refers to as "Fireflies"—to embrace their unique abilities and effect positive change in the world.
During our conversation, Julie shared insights into her philosophy of empowerment, the importance of authenticity, and the courage required to pursue one's passion. She discussed how her experiences across various sectors have shaped her understanding of leadership and transformation. Julie also highlighted the practical exercises included in her book, designed to help readers move from theory to action.
For those seeking inspiration and practical tools to make a meaningful impact, Julie's message is both timely and empowering. To learn more about her work and access additional resources, visit extraordinaryfireflies.com.
Project Update: Daddest Jokes – Almost There!
I’m in the home stretch with Daddest Jokes! This week I’ve been making the final edits to the ARC (Advanced Reader Copy), tightening up the last bits of layout and language. It’s the final polish before sending it off for full publishing, and it’s feeling so close to ready.
It’s been a long (and pun-filled) road, but seeing it come together like this is incredibly rewarding. I’m excited to get it out into the world very soon—and even more excited to hear which jokes make you groan the loudest.
Book Review: Shape Master by DeWayne Dority – A Joyful Journey Through Shapes and Colors
This week, my 4-year-old son and I had the pleasure of reading Shape Master, a delightful children's book created by my friend DeWayne Dority. Successfully funded on Kickstarter, this 20-page book is designed to teach young readers about shapes and colors in an engaging and imaginative way.
From the moment we opened the book, my son was captivated by the vibrant illustrations and the playful narrative. Each page introduces a new shape and color, turning learning into an adventure. The characters are charming, and the story is both educational and entertaining, making it a perfect read for young children.
What makes Shape Master even more special is knowing that it was created with love and purpose. DeWayne's dedication to crafting a book that resonates with children is evident on every page. It's a testament to the power of independent publishing and the impact it can have on young minds.
Reading Shape Master with my son was a heartwarming experience. It's not just a book; it's a tool that fosters learning and bonding. I highly recommend it to parents, educators, and anyone looking for a fun and educational read for children.
Personal Update: Big Wins, Rainy Routines, and Porch Plants
Exciting news on the paper front—we’re officially expanding to 20 pages! It hasn’t been that long since early 2022, so hitting that mark again feels like a huge accomplishment. Even more exciting is the fact that we’ve only been running the paper for two months! It’s been a whirlwind, but moments like this make it feel totally worth it.
That said, we seem to be caught in a very stubborn weather pattern lately—rain. Every. Single. Saturday. I only mention it because I’m hoping to finally host a yard sale at our place one of these weekends, but so far, the skies haven’t been too cooperative. Fingers crossed the sun shows up soon.
On a more hopeful note, as both the paper and radio side of things gain momentum, I’m really optimistic that I’ll be able to pay off my business loans. It’s not always easy juggling everything, but seeing steady growth makes all the hustle feel like it’s leading somewhere solid.
And now that the weather has finally warmed up for real, all the indoor plants have officially migrated to their seasonal summer home—the front porch. They’re soaking in the sun, and honestly, so am I.
