Book Review: Bandette: Volume 1 – Presto!
By Paul Tobin & Colleen Coover
Reading Bandette: Volume 1 – Presto! felt like stepping into a charming, pastel-colored Parisian caper where wit and whimsy steal the show as much as the heroine herself. Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover have crafted a delightful graphic novel that balances action, humor, and style with the flair of a classic European comic.
At the heart of the story is Bandette, a teenage thief with a love for the theatrical, a soft spot for sweets, and an unflappable sense of confidence. Whether she's dodging the clumsy-yet-determined Inspector Belgique or going toe-to-toe with rival thief Monsieur, Bandette is always two steps ahead—and loving every minute of it.
The plot weaves together secret organizations, stolen treasures, and cheeky banter, but it never takes itself too seriously. That’s part of the magic. There’s real danger and stakes in the story, but the tone stays breezy and fun, like a jazz melody on a Paris street corner.
Colleen Coover’s artwork is absolutely perfect for this world. Her watercolor-style illustrations are vibrant and expressive, lending a light, airy feel that fits the tone beautifully. Every panel feels alive with motion and mood.
Bandette isn’t just a master thief—she’s a master of winning hearts. This is a book for fans of adventure, clever heroes, and gorgeous art. I can see why it’s an Eisner Award-winner, and I’m definitely looking forward to reading the next volume. If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Bandette yet, now’s the time to make her acquaintance—with a chocolate truffle in hand, of course.
Personal Update: Week 2 – Settling into Newspaper Life & Planning for the Future
We’ve officially wrapped up week two of owning The Bridge Weekly, and it’s full steam ahead! Most of our focus right now is on getting our amazing sales team comfortable and confident with how we can package both radio and newspaper together in a way that brings real value to local businesses. It’s been exciting to see the synergy between the two platforms start to come together. We’re also finalizing the logistics of getting the paper mailed out again—a move I think our readers will really appreciate.
On the home front, while the business is moving in a positive direction, Edith and I are also taking some time to think about our future—especially when it comes to retirement. Owning and operating a business keeps us in the present day-to-day, but it’s just as important to think long-term. This week, we made it a priority to sit down and talk with a financial advisor. Honestly, it was a huge relief and gave us some much-needed peace of mind.
So here’s my little PSA: if you don’t already have a financial advisor, find one. It’s never too early (or too late) to get your future sorted.
Onward and upward!
Iggy had a bit of a run in with some broken glass on the floor. after a brief trip to emergency room, he’s in good spirits. He enjoyed a popsicle from the nurse!
