Exploring Cybersecurity and Poetry: A Week of Insightful Conversations on Storycomic Presents
This past week on Storycomic Presents, I had the pleasure of hosting two incredible guests who brought a wealth of knowledge and inspiration to our listeners. From the intricate world of cybersecurity to the profound depths of contemporary poetry, these interviews offered a fascinating glimpse into the diverse realms of our modern world.
Episode 367: Unveiling Cyber Threats with Theresa Payton
In Episode 367, I interviewed cybersecurity titan Theresa Payton about her thought-provoking new book, "Manipulated: Inside the Cyberwar to Hijack Elections and Distort the Truth." As the first female Chief Information Officer at the White House and a leading cybersecurity expert, Theresa offers an authoritative look into the invisible wars waged in cyberspace.
"Manipulated" delves into the increasingly sophisticated world of cyberattacks and digital espionage that threaten the very fabric of democracies worldwide. Theresa articulates the challenges posed by artificial intelligence and "deepfake" technology, emphasizing their role in creating convincing disinformation that can sway public opinion and influence election outcomes.
During our conversation, Theresa explained the vulnerabilities in our digital voting systems and discussed how foreign and domestic actors exploit these weaknesses to undermine trust in electoral processes. She stressed the importance of understanding these threats to take proactive measures to protect our information landscape. Listeners will come away with a deeper understanding of cybersecurity’s importance to our modern existence and the critical steps needed to safeguard our personal and national interests in an increasingly connected world.
Episode 368: The Emotional Depths of Poetry with Virus the Poet
In Episode 368, I delved into the poetic world of Viral Gor, known artistically as Virus the Poet. Celebrated for his profound and evocative poetry, Virus discussed his latest work, "Poetry Is Motion: Mind, Body & Soul," an anthology that captures the essence of human emotions and experiences.
Virus the Poet, hailing from Toronto, has made significant strides in contemporary poetry, intertwining his personal journey with universal themes of love, loss, and human connection. His latest collection serves as a conduit for readers to explore deep emotional truths and the complexities of interpersonal relationships through beautifully crafted verse.
During our interview, Virus shared his approach to tackling profound subjects with both sensitivity and boldness, aiming to resonate with readers across cultural boundaries. His work not only explores the intensity of love and the pain of loss but also celebrates the resilience of the human spirit in the face of life's challenges. Listeners and readers alike will appreciate Virus's unique voice and his commitment to enriching the literary landscape with his thoughtful and inspiring poetry.
These episodes of Storycomic Presents are must-listens for anyone interested in the intricate balance of cybersecurity in our modern world and the emotional depths that poetry can explore. I hope you enjoy these conversations as much as I did.
Update on 'Daddest Jokes'
I’m excited to share some updates on the 'Daddest Jokes Volume 3' project! Things are moving along nicely, and I’ve worked hard on the Kickstarter page. I’m currently getting the reward tiers lined up, ensuring there’s something special for everyone who supports the project. Your enthusiasm and support mean the world to me, and I can’t wait to launch this campaign.
Just like last year, I’ll probably contact my 'Friend of the Show' guests again to read some jokes. Their contributions made the project so much fun, and I’m looking forward to involving them once more.
On a side note, I’ve also started rereading my 'Appliance' role-playing game. It’s been a while, but I’m slowly getting back into it and enjoying the process. It’s a great way to unwind and get those creative juices flowing.
Book Review: "All Puns Blazing" by Geoff Rowe
If you’re a fan of clever wordplay and pun-tastic humor, "All Puns Blazing" by Geoff Rowe is a must-read. Arranged by specific topics and themes such as food, transport, family, sports, Christmas, and more, this book is jam-packed with jokes that will make you laugh and groan in equal measure.
I was delighted to receive this book as a gift from my wife's cousin and my very first podcast guest, Jane Straw, when she came to visit. Her thoughtful present quickly became a treasure trove of humor for me.
The book features contributions from comedians who have entered The UK Pun Championships over the years, ensuring a high-quality collection of puns. While many of the jokes have a distinctly British flavor, complete with cultural references that might be a bit obscure for an American audience, there are still plenty of gems that anyone can appreciate. In fact, I’ve found a good number of these puns to be pure gold, and I fully plan on broadcasting them to my audience.
"All Puns Blazing" is not just a book of jokes; it's a testament to the art of the pun. Geoff Rowe has curated a fantastic selection that showcases the creativity and wit of some of the best punsters in the UK. Whether you’re looking for a quick laugh or some new material to share with friends, this book has something for everyone.
Personal Update: Family Adventures and First Solo Broadcast
As always, here are some highlights from this past week, which have been filled with family fun and exciting milestones at work.
Jane has spent a whole week with us, and Edith and the kiddos have taken her on some fantastic local adventures. It’s been wonderful having her here and seeing everyone enjoy their time together. On Friday, I had the opportunity to work from home, which allowed me to join the family on a trip to the top of Mt. Mansfield. It was a beautiful day, and we had a great time exploring and taking in the stunning views. It was really nice to spend quality time with the family.
On the work side, the Fourth of July was a significant event for us. I did a remote broadcast of the parade, which was a new and exciting challenge. This was my first time handling a remote broadcast on my own, without a seasoned WYKR employee to assist. I’m pleased to say it went smoothly, thanks in part to our new employee who worked the board in the studio. It was a fantastic experience, and I’m proud of how well it all came together.
